Measurement recordExhaustive count, public source
Thousands of storefronts sell Chinese food trailers. 106 Chinese trailer makers are registered with NHTSA.
Every US-bound trailer needs a manufacturer of record in NHTSA’s files — that is where the title-ability of your food trailer ultimately points. So we counted the files: on 9 August 2026 we paged the entire public vPIC manufacturer database, all 22,881 registrants across 92 countries, and grouped them by country and vehicle type. The gap between the storefront count and the registrant count is the finding.
1. The numbers
| Country | Trailer registrants | All registrants |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 6,410 | 17,830 |
| Mexico | 237 | 361 |
| Canada | 198 | 470 |
| China | 106 | 2,589 |
| Australia | 23 | 39 |
| United Kingdom | 12 | 81 |
Two readings worth pausing on. First, China is the second-largest registrant country overall (2,589) — the filing route is plainly usable from China. Second, within those Chinese registrations, trailers (106) sit far below motorcycles (224): the categories Chinese factories export in volume are not the categories most represented in the vehicle filings. The full country × type table is in the JSON snapshot; the 106 Chinese trailer registrants are published as a CSV list (vPIC ID and registered name).
2. How a buyer uses a number like this
- Ask the specific question. Not “are you NHTSA compliant?” but: which registered manufacturer will my trailer’s VIN decode to? The answer is a name you can look up yourself in vPIC — free, no account.
- Read the answer like a record, not a verdict. A seller trading for a listed factory is ordinary — then ask for the relationship in writing and match it against the Chinese registered record. A seller who cannot name any manufacturer of record has answered a different question: nobody identifiable stands behind the vehicle paperwork.
- Cross the two systems. The NHTSA name is an English filing; the Chinese side has the registered company behind it. Reading that record — status, scope, the invoicing entity — is the half a US database cannot show.
3. Method, and what this count cannot say
- Source and coverage: NHTSA’s public vPIC
GetAllManufacturersendpoint, paged exhaustively — 229 pages at 100 records, 22,881 manufacturers, captured 9 August 2026. No sampling. - Counting rule: a manufacturer counts for a vehicle type if that type appears in its vPIC vehicle-type list; country is the registrant’s own filed country, normalised. “Trailer” is vPIC’s category — it includes all trailer kinds, not food trailers specifically.
- A filing database, not a compliance register: registration under 49 CFR Part 566 is self-submitted identifying information. Listed ≠ compliant or good; absent ≠ violating — production can be registered under a different corporate name, and the database moves as filings arrive. This is a dated snapshot.
- Transport note: the API served direct connections and refused our proxy egress (TLS-level failure, consistent with our earlier government-host observations) — recorded so others measuring from unusual network paths know what to expect.
