1. The deadlines, in order
Two documents set the dates. The Dispute Rules cover the claim. The Transaction Services Agreement covers what follows a decision. Both name Alibaba.com as the decider.
| Step | Deadline | Where it is set |
|---|---|---|
| Report a material defect | 14 days after receipt | Dispute Rules, article 57 |
| Show damage with an unboxing video | Within 7 days of acceptance | Dispute Rules, article 40 |
| Open a dispute | 30 days after receipt is confirmed, 60 days for L3 and L4 buyers | Dispute Rules, article 17 |
| Upload evidence | 2 business days | Dispute Rules, article 20 |
| Seller proves delivery | 10 days after the platform asks | Dispute Rules, article 36 |
| Refund paid | 10 working days after you give bank details | Trade Assurance Rules, article 9.3 |
| Start arbitration after a decision | 20 calendar days | Transaction Services Agreement, clause 10.3 |
| Claim against Alibaba.com | 1 year after the event | Transaction Services Agreement, clause 10.7 |
The rules count some of these in calendar days and some in business days. Read each unit as written.
Blogs often quote older rule text. An earlier version of the Dispute Rules, updated 17 September 2015, is still on the Alibaba.com Rules Center. The dates above come from the version effective 9 July 2026. This page does not decide your claim and is not legal advice.
2. When the 30 days start
The 30 days run from your confirmation of receipt, or from the day the system confirms receipt for you. If you never click confirm, the system does it.
The Trade Assurance Rules point to a separate fulfilment document for the automatic dates. Its table says:
- Express or multimodal with tracking. Delivered within 15 days: confirmation at day 15. Delivered later: confirmation on the delivery day. Still not delivered at day 60: confirmation at day 60.
- EXW or FCA orders, or a delivery address in mainland China. Confirmation at day 60 after shipment.
- Air, sea, land and post. The table shows a slash and gives no time.
- One delay each. Before receipt is confirmed, each side may delay automatic confirmation once, by 15 days.
This means your deadline can start before the goods reach you, or long after. Open the order page the day it ships and note the automatic date. Then add the 14-day, 30-day and 60-day marks to your calendar.
The fulfilment document carries a page date of 8 December 2023. We could not confirm it is the current version. Trust the date shown on your own order.
3. What counts as evidence
- The official chat. Messages in the Alibaba.com chat tool count by default. Offline contracts, calls, e-mails and third-party chat apps do not, unless both sides agree they are authentic (article 22).
- Platform records. The Trade Assurance Rules treat Alibaba system records as the primary evidence and other material as supporting (article 8.6.1).
- Your own agreement. The platform respects a separate agreement only where it does not conflict with its rules. Where it conflicts, the platform decides whether it applies (article 3).
- Damage. Film the unboxing as one continuous video from the sealed box to the damage. After day 7 you need a formal damage certificate from the carrier (article 40).
- Defects you can see. Send photos or video.
- Defects you cannot see. You need an inspection report from a qualified body, and the claimant advances the cost (article 56). If no inspection was agreed, the platform may name an inspector and the liable party pays (article 42).
- Late or false evidence. The platform may end the process or decide on what it already has (article 21).
Plan inspection before shipment where you can. A failed pre-shipment inspection that the seller does not fix in time supports a refund (article 43).
4. After a decision: the 20-day step
This is the clause buyers miss most often. It sits in the Transaction Services Agreement, clause 10.3:
“If you are dissatisfied with Alibaba.com’s determination … you must apply to the Hong Kong Arbitration Centre (‘HKIAC’) for arbitration and notify Alibaba.com of such application within 20 calendar days after the date of receipt of Alibaba.com’s determination.”
The same clause adds three things.
- If neither side applies in 20 days, the decision is final and binding.
- Both sides are deemed to give up any claim against Alibaba.com, Alipay and their affiliates.
- The agreement says its limits apply unless applicable law says otherwise.
Clause 10.5 sets the format. One arbitrator sits. The language is English and the place is Hong Kong, unless the parties agree otherwise. The hearing can run by phone, online or on paper. The losing side bears the costs unless the award says otherwise.
Two more limits follow. If you start court proceedings in breach of clause 10, you must indemnify Alibaba.com against its losses (clause 10.6). A claim against Alibaba.com cannot be brought more than one year after the event (clause 10.7). Hong Kong law governs the agreement (clause 10.1).
The Chinese text of the agreement says the same. Write the date in your calendar on the day a decision arrives. Ask a lawyer admitted in the right jurisdiction before the deadline, even if you plan to accept the result. This guide cannot advise on your case.
5. The buyer summary page and the rules differ
Alibaba.com publishes a short buyer page about Trade Assurance. It says you can ask for a refund within 30 days of delivery. It also says your order and communication records are the basis of the decision.
The rules say more.
- The 30 days run from receipt confirmation, including automatic confirmation, and not from delivery.
- A material defect has its own 14-day limit.
- Only the official chat counts by default.
The summary page does not mention the 14-day limit, the 60 days for L3 and L4 buyers, the automatic confirmation dates or the official-chat rule. We read the full page text on 11 October 2026 to check. When the summary and the rules differ, plan around the rules.
6. Chargeback or dispute: choose one
The Dispute Rules apply only while the buyer has not started a chargeback. If you file one with your card issuer, the platform route is closed.
Other platforms work in a similar way. A chargeback can close an eBay case. Amazon makes you ineligible. PayPal closes its own claim if you also dispute with your card issuer.
Decide before you file. Card rules and Alibaba.com rules have their own limits, so ask your card issuer for its time limit at the same time.
7. How other platforms count the days
The start point differs, so compare with care.
| Platform | Time to claim |
|---|---|
| Alibaba.com | 30 days after receipt confirmation, 60 for L3 and L4 buyers |
| Made-in-China.com | 30 days after receiving the goods |
| eBay, item not received | Up to 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date |
| Amazon | 90 days after the maximum estimated delivery date |
| PayPal, not as described | 30 days from delivery or 180 days from payment, whichever is sooner |
| Global Sources Direct Order | 28 days after shipment, then PayPal claims up to 180 days from purchase |
| AliExpress | 15 days after you confirm receipt, by default |
| DHgate | Most items can be reported within 21 days of receipt |
The same group writes different rules for its domestic platforms. On 1688 and Taobao, a seller who stays silent for 36 hours triggers an automatic refund. Those rules are for other platforms and other buyers. They do not apply on Alibaba.com.
8. Six checks before you pay
Protection covers orders placed and paid for through the platform. Trade Assurance adds no fee of its own. Alibaba.com's help centre payment table, read on 12 October 2026, shows 2.99% on cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. It shows no platform fee on a cross-border bank transfer (T/T), which is open in nine currencies: USD, AUD, CAD, SGD, EUR, GBP, HKD, JPY and CNH. Your own bank still charges for the transfer and the currency conversion. In our 12 October sample of bank quotes for a US$2,000 invoice, that came to a median of about 2% to 4% by country, from only one to three quotes each. The table does not say whether a transfer service paying into the order's bank account stays inside the protection, so ask before you pay that way. Checkout shows the fees that apply to you.
- Write the specification into the order. The platform may set aside a side agreement that conflicts with its rules.
- Agree the dates. A seller cannot extend a shipment date by declaring a delay on its own. If no delivery deadline is agreed, the default is 60 days after shipment for express, air and post, and 90 days for sea, land and multimodal.
- Name a penalty. If you agree a higher penalty than the platform sets, the higher amount prevails, up to the amount paid.
- Ask about One Touch. You get no refund if you knew or should have known that the seller had to use One Touch services and did not.
- Book inspection early. Hidden defects need a report you pay for first.
- Custom goods need a written specification. PayPal excludes custom-made items from not-as-described claims, and Made-in-China.com does not refund customised products.
Rules do not replace knowing who you are buying from. A company record check can show identity and recorded status. It cannot decide a claim.

Questions buyers ask
How does the Alibaba.com dispute process work?
Talk to the seller in the official Alibaba.com chat first. If you cannot agree, apply for dispute resolution inside the time limit and upload evidence within 2 business days. The platform then decides. After its decision you have 20 calendar days to start arbitration.
How long do I have to open an Alibaba.com dispute?
The Dispute Rules give 30 days after you confirm receipt or the system confirms it for you. Buyers at levels L3 and L4 get 60 days. A material defect must be reported within 14 days of receipt.
What happens if I miss the 20-day arbitration deadline?
Under the Transaction Services Agreement, if neither side applies for arbitration within 20 calendar days of the decision, the decision is final and binding. Both sides are also deemed to give up any claim against Alibaba, Alipay and their affiliates.
Does Alibaba count messages sent outside its chat?
By default only the official Alibaba.com chat counts. Offline contracts, calls, e-mails and third-party chat tools do not, unless both sides agree they are authentic.
Can I file a chargeback and an Alibaba.com dispute?
The Dispute Rules apply only while the buyer has not started a chargeback. Choose one route for each order.
How we checked
On 11 and 12 October 2026 we read the platforms' rule and policy pages in a real browser and saved each page. We copied every quoted clause by script and checked that it appears in the saved text. The set holds 210 clauses from 35 documents on 10 platforms. The payment figures in section 8 come from Alibaba.com's help centre table and from bank quotes on Wise's public comparison page. We recorded them on 12 October 2026 and kept the quotes collected in the previous 24 hours. We have no data on how Alibaba.com decides cases, so this guide makes no claim about outcomes. The fulfilment document and the Supplemental Services Agreement carry older dates, and we could not confirm they are current.
