1688.com in English: what 1688 is, and what it is not.
1688.com runs in Chinese. When we opened the site on 18 September 2026 it served a Chinese interface, with no English version offered. Buyers read it with browser translation or work through an agent.
Alibaba Group describes 1688, founded in 1999, as China’s leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace, with more than one million paying members in fiscal year 2024. Those facts describe scale and role. They do not prove any listing accurate, any seller a factory, or any order deliverable.

Five of the seven official hosts shown returned non-200 responses in all three browser-agent requests. This was a mainland-China access test, not an overseas buyer test or a registry search. It does not establish why requests failed; HTTP 200 alone does not prove that a record was readable.
The platforms target different markets: Alibaba.com is international; 1688 focuses on domestic wholesale. For either listing, ask what the quote includes: the exact variant, packing, payment fees, export documents and delivery destination.
Compare the same specification and delivered cost. A lower listing price alone does not establish a cheaper order or prove that two shops belong to the same factory.
Direct buying depends on payment and delivery eligibility.
Check these four points for your account and order before assuming an agent is required:
- Language. Listings, variant options, seller chat and dispute flows are in Chinese. The listing price you see may belong to a different variant than the one you mean.
- Payment. WorldFirst lists international 1688 payment options: World Card, WorldFirst Payments using USD, and World Pay using CNH with Alipay verification and account binding. Checked 8 September 2026. Confirm availability for your account and order; this is not a guarantee for every country.
- Delivery. Confirm the destinations offered for your order. If the seller only delivers within China, agree a receiving point and who handles the export leg.
- Seller expectations. A domestic seller may have no export paperwork experience, no English contract habit, and a quote that assumes none of it. That is normal on 1688. On its own it is no red flag. It does mean the export burden lands on your side of the table.
The three routes, honestly compared.
Route 1 — direct. You contract with the named seller yourself. Viable if you can resolve Chinese-language listing details, use an available payment route, and control acceptance and hand-off. Compare all costs, including receiving, export work and claims.
Route 2, a buying agent. An intermediary orders, receives, consolidates and re-ships. Ask which fees, checks and claim responsibilities the agent accepts in writing. Whatever agent you use, the seller-side checks in the next section still apply. An agent buying from an unverified seller moves the risk, it does not remove it.
Route 3, a seller-side quote. Some desks, including ours, will act as the seller for one defined order: you specify the product, we decide whether we can quote it. That is a different legal role from an agent. The linked page states the boundaries, including that payment clears before goods move and that we never verify a supplier and then offer to replace them.
Before any route: check who is behind the shop.
Every registered mainland seller has a legal identity that exists independently of its 1688 shop front. Getting it is a routine ask:
- Ask for the business licence (营业执照). Get the registered Chinese name and 18-character Unified Social Credit Code, then keep them with the shop link and quote. An English or storefront name is only a search lead. Our study of 106 selected English-name queries returned candidates for 61 queries (57.5%); candidates did not confirm who controlled a shop.
- Check the code’s structure first. The 18 characters carry a check digit defined by national standard GB 32100-2015. The free checker validates it in your browser and catches transcription errors in seconds. A passing code means it meets the format and check-digit rules. It does not prove correct transcription, existence or identity.
- Obtain a dated record. Use the official registry through a China-side channel you trust, or request a scoped record report. Our free browser tools do not retrieve a current registration record.
- Compare, then decide. Registered name vs the shop’s claims; registered scope vs what they sell you; status must be active (存续). A mismatch is a question to resolve in writing, not automatic proof of fraud, and not something to pay through.
Reading the registration record, and when the official portal will not open.
China’s National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (国家企业信用信息公示系统, GSXT) is the official registry. Our registry guide explains search keys, fields and no-result limits. The dated availability study and challenge analysis describe specific access tests; they do not establish universal access or the cause of every failure.
If a record matters for an order, obtain a dated check of the exact entity. A licensed business-information source and the official register are different sources: keep the source, query date and any unresolved differences. A failed request or no result does not prove that the company does not exist.
What the record proves is narrow and useful: the registered identity, status and scope at the query date. Reliability, quality, factory ownership and delivery are separate questions needing separate evidence.
What this guide deliberately does not do.
It does not arrange freight, calculate customs duty for your destination, or finance purchases. It does not rank agents or recommend specific sellers. And the checks above do not certify any supplier as safe. They establish who you are dealing with and what is on record, which is the floor under every other decision and never the ceiling.
